Making existing clothes work together

I have an invitation to a gallery opening with friends, but there is no dress guidance beyond the start time. My reliable starting point is a cream shirt with black trousers, which feels comfortable without requiring a new outfit. Something a little more expressive would be nice, provided it still feels like clothes I would choose on an ordinary day. I have been using color analysis but I am still more interested in the whole outfit than in choosing a definite seasonal label for myself. Would you add a muted blue scarf to these pieces, or let a textured bag provide the extra interest? I will probably walk to the venue, so comfortable shoes and a layer for the evening also need to fit the plan. If you could change just one accessory, what would help this outfit feel considered and still comfortable for the evening?
